It was raining today.

As usual, I stepped out of the MRT station to see Mr Tan approaching.

Mr Tan is a small-built, fierce-looking elderly man.

Although he is already 81 years old, Mr Tan is still fit and nimble-mind.

Every morning, without fail, he would head to Chinatown to catch up with his friends.

I would greet him with a smile each time I see him. But he never acknowledged my presence – looking on straight ahead, face expressionless - let alone smile back at me.

The rain made the difference. Today, when he saw me, Mr Tan asked, “Do you have an umbrella? It’s raining.” And he offered his long umbrella to me.

“Yes, I have an umbrella. Thank you, and have a nice day,” I replied.

Mr Tan’s small gesture has warmed my heart. For he came across as fierce and unapproachable, a no nonsense type of person who doesn’t engage in small talk. 

It little encounter is an encouragement to me, to continue smiling at Mr Tan and other elderly persons, even when they do not reciprocate.
