"Hello, I am Gerbera. I am a South African native who has been adopted by other countries, including those in Asia.

I am named after German botanist Dr. Traugott Gerber.

Some people use me as potted garden plant while other use me for decorative flower arrangements. And then there are those who buy me as single stalk cut flowers for occasions such as Valentine's Day.

I dare say that I am a very popular flower, because I am ranked fifth in terms of the most used cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip respectively). My yellow cousins are often mistaken for sunflowers, because, well, we do resemble sunflowers. But I'd like to think that we are more dainty, elegant and feminine than sunflowers. Don't you think so?

Otherwise, why would people use us as decorative flowers, especially for hand bouquets for weddings?
Do you know that in floral lingo, we Gerberas represent purity and cheerfulness?

Here's wishing all of you a beautiful and cheerful Valentine's Day."
