Thank You for Giving Us Your Time, Which Money Cannot Buy

Mr Chua is a 72 year old retiree. His standard attire is a blue long-sleeved shirt worn over a white T-shirt, and grey long pants, plus a wide-brimmed straw hat.

And his ‘uniform’ reminds me of my paternal aunt, who used to own a small vegetable farm in Lim Chu Kang. Whenever I visited my aunt, I would see her working in the field, under the scorching sun, bent over a plot of green, leafy vegetables. Her get-up is just like Mr Chua’s - long-sleeved shirt over a plain tee, long pants and a straw hat.

But unlike my aunt, Mr Chua is a gardener. He used to be one, and still is now, albeit as a volunteer at St. John’s Home for Elderly Persons.

Volunteering provides an avenue for Mr Chua to continue pursuing is first love – to be in close contact with nature, caring for flora and fauna, working his ‘magic’ to transform a grass patch into a flowering garden.

Rain or shine, he comes to the Home every Tuesday and Friday, and quietly goes about his gardening.

Often, Mr Chua’s work goes unnoticed, until you see a beautiful white hibiscus sticking out from underneath a tree, or an entire row of magenta bougainvillea standing tall in the brick planter.

His efforts may not help the Home in fundraising, and neither will it improve our operational efficiency, but it is valuable nonetheless.

To me, Mr Chua is a good example of a ‘model volunteer’, one who contributes without expecting any returns, someone who is committed to his volunteering duties even though he does not receive any stipend.

Today, 5 December 2014, is International Volunteers’ Day. And we take this opportunity to thank all volunteers for their ‘love in action’, through their acts of volunteerism.

As the saying goes, 'Time is money.'

“Thank you for giving us your time, which is something money cannot buy.”
