This Chinese New Year, Shoken generously chose to share the spirit of the season by donating his Ang Pows to St. John’s Home (SJH). This heartwarming gesture will support our monthly birthday celebrations, ensuring that each resident feels special and cherished throughout the year.

Shoken’s connection with the elderly goes beyond monetary donations. He loves spending time with our seniors. “They are the Pioneer Generation and have built Singapore from the ground up. I am honoured to support and to spend time with them”, he said.

He recounted a meaningful moment playing a game with an elderly resident who initially seemed withdrawn but gradually became more engaged as the game went on. As the game progressed, the resident was laughing and sharing stories about his childhood. That moment made him realise how much companionship and small gestures can brighten someone’s day.

However, Shoken also acknowledged the challenges of working with the elderly. He shared that each resident has unique needs, requiring patience and understanding to build rapport and connect with each senior.

For Shoken, learning to communicate effectively with each resident has been both a challenge and a rewarding learning experience. He found that witnessing the joy brought by simple acts of kindness was incredibly touching, and this experience, combined with the exceptional care at St. John’s Home, underscored the profound importance of generosity and compassion towards our elderly.
