They Are Like My Grandparents

Mary has worked as a Healthcare Assistant at St. John’s Home (SJH) for 18 years, focusing on the well-being of elderly residents. She started in 2007, marking her first experience working overseas.

"My sister helped me find a job at SJH, specifically looking for healthcare-related work as I like taking care of people," Mary shared.

Mary reflects on her experiences with residents and derives satisfaction from engaging with them. "The residents often feel lonely, so I converse with them, and they share stories about their families," she explains. Despite her demanding schedule, she consistently prioritises taking time to listen to them, recognising that this simple act brings them immense joy. Even when residents suggest she focus on her work if busy, Mary remains committed to ensuring their happiness by making time for them.

The initial language barrier posed a significant challenge to Mary. “Most residents speak in Mandarin, but I do not understand," she admits. Her colleagues assisted her with translations and explanations during the early days. Over time, Mary and the residents developed their own methods of communication. She remarked, “sometimes I do not fully grasp what they are saying, but I pretend to understand and acknowledge them”, and they respond with, “thank you for listening to me.”

Often, they simply want just a listening ear.

Like any job, there are tough moments. Mary recalls times when residents get angry or upset and direct their frustrations at her. When asked to share any specific incidents, she couldn’t recall because she doesn't take them to heart.

Being away from family is another challenge. "I miss my family. They supported me a lot in the past. Working overseas, I rely on myself. When I face problems, I have to stay strong and pray," said Mary.

The support from donors and volunteers significantly helps Mary in her daily responsibilities. Volunteer assistance with laundry allows her to focus on other important tasks, such as meal preparation and service.

Additionally, Mary shared that meal sponsorships are particularly helpful during periods of low staffing to boost staff’s morale.

What motivates her after all these years? For Mary, it is the familiar and positive interactions with the residents, fostering a bond akin to family. "They are like my grandparents, and seeing the residents happy brings me joy." This profound connection, coupled with her strong faith, reinforces her dedication. "I pray to God for the strength to continue my work here."

Mary's dedication and the genuine care she shows our residents over the past 18 years have been invaluable. She truly reflects the spirit of St. John's Home, and we are deeply grateful for her commitment.
