Growing Old Amongst Friends and Family.

As I reach my 60th year on this fair earth, I find that thoughts of growing old and yes, finally breathing my last come to mind. Not in a morbid way but in a reflective manner.

How do I want to live the rest of this life that God has so graciously granted me. And how would I like to engage with others as I age?

From the lives of many seniors around me, friends, relatives and colleagues, there seems to be three most important aspects to a fruitful run of the last lap, so to say.

  • Keeping vital relationships alive

This is indeed key, relationships define us, we are sons and daughters, parents, best friends, mentors, joint by a whole web of inter- links. The closest and strongest are our bedrock and by nurturing them we maintain the solid ground upon which we are sustained, emotionally and spiritually. Apart from my immediately family, I make sure that I keep in touch with a handful of close friends, meeting up with them regularly, affirming one another.

  • Keeping physically fit.

When I was in 40's I realized that my energy level and stamina was beginning to fade. I decided to start exercising regularly and to eat less calorie laden food. Today, I work out at the gym twice a week and walk my dog for an hour three times a week. By doing this I find that my energy level is sustained and I am able to go about my activities with ease.

  • Being a purposeful part of the community

After officially retiring from full time work about 5 years ago, I decided to get involved in volunteering in the social service organisations. As I interacted with people from many aspects of live, I find that there are many individuals out there who work tirelessly to make life better for others who are not so fortunate; the poor, the disadvantaged children, the abandoned elderly, and dysfunctional families. Many senior citizens in their 70's and 80's are actively engaged in projects and work that benefit those in need.

One such place that I volunteer at is St John's Home for Elderly Persons. Although the residents are away from their families, they are cared for by a group of professionals they can call friends and family. Their living quarters are cosy and they are free to roam the place like their own home. Meals are taken together in a big dining area and recreational activities are conducted weeky. Whenever I visit, I see smiling faces, some of whom will greet me with a cheery “Hello”.

Indeed, as I grow into my even more senior years, I hope to continue to purposefully contribute to the community and organisations like St John’s Home For the Elderly.
