Horse Therapy: Unforgettable Encounters

Posted by St. John's Home for Elderly Persons on 08-Jul-2026 10:13:33

“I’m so excited, I’m so excited!” Madam Wong Fong Keng exclaimed as she craned her neck for a better look at the two miniature Falabella horses at the end of the room. “I have seen big horses before when SJH brought us to the Turf Club. But this is the first time I’m seeing such small horses. They are so cute!”

Mr Arvind was also waiting eagerly to meet these miniature horses on 26 April 2026. He explained that he loves horses and horses like him. He had spent time with big horses at the Polo Club and the Turf Club as a young man. But he had never been around miniature horses before.

This wonderful day for SJH residents was made possible by Sunray, the company undertaking the renovations at SJH for its transition to a nursing home. Sunray’s leadership believes strongly in corporate social responsibility and funded the visit of Equal – an NGO that cares for retired horses – to SJH. Equal offers therapeutic programmes for the young, the old and not-so-old using these horses. The enthusiastic response of SJH residents to Equal’s miniature horses demonstrated how effective horse therapy can be.  Click here for more information about EQUAL.

Sunray’s leadership strongly encourages volunteering by its staff. So, it was no surprise that its employees were on hand to run the event and make sure that every resident got a chance to spend time and have their photos taken with Friday and Sha Yang. In addition, Sunray’s staff devised clever and engaging horse-themed games to keep residents occupied while waiting for their turn. Residents enjoyed these games; some chose to play them several times.

The highlight of the day for residents was their chance to get up close and personal with Friday and Sha Yang. Everyone wanted to interact and take photos with the horses. Their smiling faces in the photos and videos below are eloquent testimony to the tremendous joy that interacting with the horses brought them.

Our residents could not stop talking about how much they enjoyed their time with Friday and Sha Yang even after the horses left. Madam Wong Fong Keng exclaimed that it was her “good fortune” to meet the miniature horses at eighty-five years old. It was akin to winning the lottery. She declared that she was utterly happy and expected to relive her experience in happy dreams.

Madam Ng Wooi Fong, whose zodiac animal is the horse, felt that Friday was a friend waiting to talk to her. When she stroked and patted Friday, she was struck by how calm and friendly he was.

Madam Liew Heng Thai expressed the feelings of many residents as she watched Friday and Sha Yang leave. “It’s hard to see them go. They are very cute.”

A very big thank you from SJH and residents to Sunray and Equal for bringing Friday and Sha Yang to us. Your generosity has given our residents an unforgettable day and happy memories that will always be cherished.
