This is Part 1 of 3 series of the food blogs from The Community Service Interest Group (CSIG) in the School of Life Science and Chemical Technology (LSCT) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

CSIG aims to encourage students from LSCT to serve the community.  During the pandemic, all volunteers activities with direct physical contact with our elderly residents is suspended.  Hence, the group decided to contribute to our Home with this series, recommending hawker food which  are elderly-friendly.  These are their food adventures at Lorong 8 Toa Payoh Hawker Centre.

Mixed Curry Rice (contributed by Darren Tan)

Scissors Cut Curry Rice

I had rice with mixed ingredients and a generous amount of curry drizzled on the rice.

I found the signature curry packed with flavour and not too spicy. It was not too salty as well and it goes well with the rice. For $4.50, I got a myriad of ingredients including a curry chicken wing, a piece of luncheon meat, a piece of chicken chop and some cabbage.

Duck Rice (contributed by Edna Woon)

Duck Rice

The duck rice was affordable going at $4 a plate.

The duck rice portion was an average size. The taste was not too bland and the sauce added another layer of flavour to the dish. It was accompanied with beancurd, nuts and salted vegetables.

The duck meat was quite succulent and it was tender.   As it has high sodium content, this dish is better enjoyed in moderation.

Bak Kut Teh (contributed by Juno Ong)

Bak Kut Teh

Priced at $5.50 with rice, Hock Kee Bak Kut Teh was affordable with the generous chunks of meat.

The Bak Kut Teh had the perfect peppery kick and was not too salty paired with the bowl of rice. The soup was flavorful as well. The pork ribs were chopped into bite-size portions. I loved the tender cut of pork ribs with the meat peeling off the bones.
